Frequently Asked Questions

How does this work? Can I shop by myself? I don't want to get a million calls!

Like most other things on the internet, you can get a quote and fill out a life insurance application all on your own. You can self-serve. You have an independent agent (me!) standing by to help you. You get the best of both worlds.

You:

  • Fill out the form and get an initial quote.
  • Select a carrier and start their application.
  • Fill out an application, which will have health questions.
  • Depending on the carrier, the policy, and you, the carrier will have requirements for the policy. These can be as simple as the carrier pulling your motor vehicle records, or as complicated as a full medical exam.
  • Ultimately (the exact process differs by carrier), you'll get an offer of insurance.

If you don't want to talk to someone today, and just get a great deal on term life insurance, you can do that. Make sure you look for the "instant decision" badge amongst carriers.

If you want to talk to a knowledgeable independent agent and do your application together with them, you can do that. If you want to apply first, then discuss your offer with an agent, you can do that as well.

Will I pay more buying with an agent vs. directly?

It will cost the same, regardless of how you purchase it. Life insurance prices are regulated by the state, and you'll pay the same for a policy whether you buy it directly from a carrier, from a captive agent, a fancier website, or an independent agent.

Do I need a medical exam?

It depends on your age, your health, and the insurance carrier. Many of my clients have been approved for more than $1M+ of term life insurance without an exam. This is true for younger, healthier clients, especially those under 40.

Some carriers embrace non-medical approaches. Non-medical exam term life insurance policies have health questions and underwriting criteria. Some carriers require physical exams.

If you see the "Physical Exam Required" box next to your potential insurance carrier, you'll definitely need a physical exam. These exams are complimentary and typically conducted in your home by a trained medical professional.

I have a complicated situation — can I talk to someone?

Absolutely — you have a licensed independent agent in Matt Gratt, owner of this website, National Producer Number: 21590619. You can book time with him or call and text him down at the bottom of the page.

Can I buy life insurance without talking to anyone?

Yes, depending on your age and health. You can get a quote in the quoter above and fill out an exam-free application from a carrier like Banner.

Will I get the price above?

In all likelihood, no. You will get a price from the carrier after you submit an application and it goes through underwriting. Then you will be assigned a Risk Class, which will give your final price.

It will probably not be the price above, and you should select "standard" for standard rates to get an idea of what most people get.

Is acceptance guaranteed?

No. Some applicants are declined for term insurance. We have guaranteed issue life insurance available, but it has low face amounts (typically under $25,000) and is much more expensive.

Most common health conditions — high blood pressure, high cholesterol, controlled diabetes — will be accepted with a lower risk rating by carriers.

If you'd like to discuss your situation privately, contact me and we'll have a confidential consultation.

Do I need a job to get term life insurance? What if I'm on disability?

You typically need a job to get term life insurance.

Non-working spouses can usually get life insurance up to $500,000 or so, with the exact rules varying by carrier and household income.

People receiving government disability benefits (SSDI/DI) cannot get term life insurance and should consider other options like final expense insurance.

Please contact your agent (me!) for more on this topic and I'm happy to let you know what's possible for you after discussing your situation.

Are these all available life carriers? How did you pick?

The carriers above are a curated selection, chosen based on:

  • Competitive pricing
  • Applicant-friendly and fast underwriting
  • Ease of application process
  • Customer service and claims payment
  • Company reliability and solid financials (only A+ rated companies from AM Best)

We have a relationship with a large number of carriers that are not featured above and can provide coverage in unusual situations, but the carriers above are great term carriers that have embraced technology.

There are more than 700 life insurance carriers in the United States (most are small), and we do not work with all of them nor feature all of them above.

Are these policies convertible? Do they have living benefits?

Some do, some don't. It depends on the carrier and the policy.

If you're looking for something specific you can talk to your agent (still me) and find out more, or you can use the tools and guides above to research policies.
